Georgia spans three climate zones, from hot-humid coastal Savannah through mixed-humid Atlanta to the cooler north Georgia mountains. A design sized for one end of the state is wrong at the other, and dehumidification drives equipment selection through most of the cooling season.

Plan Review Notes

    Georgia adopts State Minimum Standard Codes through the Department of Community Affairs, and the mandatory codes apply to construction statewide whether or not a local government elects to enforce them. That makes the base requirements consistent across jurisdictions, though local governments handle plan review and inspection and may adopt the optional codes and appendices on top.

  2. 02

    Georgia moved to the 2024 editions of the building, mechanical, plumbing, and fuel gas codes, plus the 2023 National Electrical Code, effective January 1, 2026. That is an unusually current code cycle, and drawings coordinated to the previous editions will read as out of date to a Georgia plan reviewer.

  3. 03

    The exception worth planning around is energy. Georgia did not move its energy code in that wave: commercial work is still held to the 2015 International Energy Conservation Code with Georgia supplements, so envelope assumptions and equipment efficiency minimums follow an older standard than the rest of the set. Every Georgia deliverable True Power Systems issues is sealed by a Professional Engineer licensed in the state.

Georgia MEP engineering questions

  1. 01What mechanical code does Georgia use?

    Georgia enforces the 2024 International Mechanical Code with 2026 Georgia Amendments, adopted as a State Minimum Standard Code by the Department of Community Affairs and effective January 1, 2026. It applies statewide whether or not the local government enforces it.

  2. 02Does Georgia follow the International Plumbing Code?

    Yes. Georgia adopts the 2024 International Plumbing Code with 2026 Georgia Amendments as a mandatory State Minimum Standard Code. The Georgia amendments take precedence where they conflict with the model code, so a design coordinated to the unamended IPC is not automatically compliant.

  3. 03Which energy code applies to a commercial building in Georgia?

    Commercial buildings in Georgia are held to the 2015 International Energy Conservation Code with Georgia supplements and amendments. Georgia moved its building, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical codes to newer editions effective January 1, 2026 but left the energy code on the 2015 edition, so the energy analysis follows an older standard than the rest of the set.

  4. 04What climate zone is Georgia for HVAC load calculations?

    Georgia spans ASHRAE climate zones 2A through 4A, from hot-humid on the coast near Savannah through mixed-humid in Atlanta to the cooler north Georgia mountains. Equipment sized for Atlanta is not correct in Savannah, and latent load and dehumidification control drive selection through most of the state.

  5. 05Who can seal MEP drawings in Georgia?

    Construction documents used for permit must be sealed by a Professional Engineer licensed in the State of Georgia. True Power Systems holds an active Georgia PE license and stamps every Georgia deliverable.

  6. 06Can you work directly for an architect as the MEP engineer of record?

    Yes. Most of our work comes in as a consultant to the architect, carrying mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design from concept through construction administration. We model in Revit and coordinate against the architectural and structural models so conflicts surface before they reach the field.
